By now you know,i’m no fan of filters. They seem to do more harm than good, giving young girls and the vulnerable even more unrealistic beauty standards to look to. It goes a lot deeper than you may realize. Have you seen the studies on what damage filters can do to young girls minds? It’s not pretty, I’ll tell you a few of the damaging impacts filters have on them. For the younger girls who are already dealing with unstable hormones, the pandemic, and online schooling to name a few, filters are having a devastating effect. I’d like to warn you, the psychological damage filters have on us is shocking!
Here is one big reason why we should ditch the filters. Unrealistic expectations, when you can change yourself, change your skin colour, whiten your teeth and fine tune your features you feel like the real version of you is ‘ugly’. This isn’t true, that modified version of you is unrealistic and fake. You’re imperfect and beautiful, I want you to know that. Using filters is so damaging, they mess with your perception of reality.
That image produced by a filter isn’t reality, your family knows what you look like, your friends and colleagues as well, they love the real you. There’s nothing wrong with you, please stop feeling like you’re less without filters. The facts are that using filters has shockingly higher increased risks of, but not limited to; anxiety, depression and body dysmorphia. This is horrible, there’s nothing wrong with you girls and ladies! Did you know that over 71% of those surveyed under 30 went to surgeons to look like their filtered selfies in the past year?! That 61% of girls and women use a filter on every post and that your risk of feeling low self -worth and suicide are directly linked to use of filters?!
These are just some of the terrible effects of filters. I’m here to let you know, nobody is perfect and we all have what makes us naturally beautiful. I don’t care what size you are or what colour your eyes are,i’m here to validate your natural beauty. I don’t use filters unless in good fun. I let you all know if I have, I come to you and leave you real. Despite the industry i’m in, I’m not pressured to change. Sure my pictures could look better and sure I could look better, that doesn’t matter. What matters is having self-worth and confidence, we all deserve it and I know we all are here for each other. I understand the effects this has on mental health, I hope this has enlightened you and that you will think twice before editing your beautiful selves. I need more lovely ladies to stand with me in being a healthy role model to those younger than us, we need to save them as well as some of you.🌸
